Response from Student’s Union of Higher Institutions to the Joint-Statement by Vice-chancellors and Presidents of 11 Universities

In a Joint-Statement issued by Vice-chancellors and Presidents of 11 Universities, they “make the strongest plea” to students to stay away from protests in Yuen Long, claiming that the protests can become “extremely volatile and dangerous”. Students’ Unions of Tertiary Institutions regrets this ignorant and insensate statement issued on 24 July.

For heads of Universities, to further spread terror in society instead of demanding action from the government with their influences is regrettably an act of ignorance. It is a cold-blooded act to urge students to stay away from Yuen Long, without considering the safety of those living in and near Yuen Long.

During the Umbrella Revolution in 2014, there were rumours of imminent shooting by the police force. Then Vice-chancellor of HKU, Prof. Peter Mathieson, and Vice-chancellor of CUHK, Prof. Joseph Sung, visited the students in Admiralty in person at once, with an intent to prevent the police force from shooting. Turning a blind eye to the brutality of Hong Kong Police Force and discouraging students from fighting for freedom of Hong Kong in such dreaded times.

Students and Citizens who will visit Yuen Long today are reminded to take care of their personal safety and security. We also hope that the heads of higher institutions can fulfill their commitment, provide support to students and HongKongers who are in need in this difficult time.
